Description
Trinity School, a coeducational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a Math Department Head, beginning September 2017.
 
In brief, the Math Department Head is responsible for (1) direct oversight of math department curriculum and instruction in grades 5-12, ensuring appropriate coherence, continuity, consistency and quality; (2) appropriate coordination between the Math Department curriculum in grades 5-12 and Lower School math curricula; (3) oversight of math department members’ professional growth, including routine review of Math Department members’ professional growth and performance; (4) collaboration with division heads, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs, and Head of School in hiring and mentoring new math teachers; and (5) supervision of departmental staffing, budget, book orders, substitute teaching arrangements, and other departmental policies and procedures. While the Math Department Head routinely works with all three division heads as well as the Head of School, the Math Department Head is supervised by the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs.
 
The next Math Department Head will be focusing sustained attention on review and enhancement of recent changes in the Upper School integrated math curriculum focused on problem-centered learning as well as on the transition from Middle School to Upper School mathematics. In addition, the Math Department Head will work with other department heads to develop and implement K-12 curricular review processes focused on mission, meaning, and coherence.
 
The ideal candidate is an exceptional math teacher and mathematician whose education and experience have brought wisdom about curriculum as well as pedagogy in both Middle and Upper Schools; a versatile leader eager to foster collegiality within the department; a skilled administrator with experience in hiring and evaluation, sensitive to the needs of department members as well as the needs of the School; an effective communicator able to articulate clearly and consistently departmental policies, practices, and decisions  to students and parents; an approachable colleague who possesses intellectual curiosity, an openness to others’ ideas, an eagerness to extend oneself for others, and a sense of humor.
