Description
Trinity School, a coeducational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a Learning Specialist for Upper School], beginning September 2013.
 
Requirement: specific training and/or expertise in learning disabilities, adolescent development, differentiated instruction, relevant learning and the brain research, with particular emphasis on executive functioning processes and skills.
 
Duties:
 
  • Serve as an integral member of the Student Support Services Team under the supervision of the Director of Learning Support.
  • Meet routinely with the Director of Learning Support and other learning specialists within the division and across divisions on agreed upon schedules to share information about students, to set goals for the division and school, and to engage in professional development.
  • Provide academic services in the form of individual and small group academic coaching, with an emphasis on helping students demystify their learning challenge and improve their metacognition.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to teach study skills, including fundamental organization and planning skills, and to directly support students who are academically vulnerable.
  • Collaborate with faculty and observe classes to help increase teachers’ awareness and understanding of students’ learning needs and to help differentiate classroom instruction for students with different learning styles or specific learning challenges.
  • Consult with parents in coordination with the Director of Learning Support as well as the Upper School psychologist, Upper School principal, and students’ deans, teachers, and advisors as necessary
  • to help parents understand the challenges faced by academically vulnerable students in school;
  • to assist in the development of a plan for parental support; and
  • to facilitate communication between and among the student, his parents, his teachers, and educational professionals from the private sector.
  • Make appropriate referrals for private tutoring and/or academic coaching, in coordination with the Director of Learning Support
  • Develop, implement, and administer a school-based learning profile and accommodation plan for eligible students.
  • Support the coordination of school-based and final-exam testing for students eligible for accommodations.
  • Support the coordination of College Board and ACT testing for students eligible for accommodations.
  • Assist students and parents in making appropriate use of learning strategies and test accommodations
  • Participate in Upper School life.
  • Assume duties as requested by the Director of Learning Support and Upper School Principal.
 
Candidates should have a Masters degree with a concentration in education, learning disorders or the like.  It is desired that the candidate can work effectively with students in the studies of science and mathematics.
