UPPER SCHOOL LEARNING SPECIALIST
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
 
 
Trinity School, a coeducational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West of Manhattan, seeks a Learning Specialist to serve students in grades 9-12, with special emphasis on writing and study skills for upper schoolers, beginning in September 2012.
 
The duties of this position include serving as an integral member of the Student Support Services and Health Team under the supervision of the Upper School Psychologist and Principal; meeting routinely with Upper School Administrative Team, Upper School Psychologist, and with Student Support Services and Health Team for the division and across divisions on agreed upon schedules to share information about students, to set goals for the division and unit-school, and to engage in professional development; providing academic services in the form of individual and small group academic coaching; working with students individually and in small groups to teach study skills, including fundamental organization and planning skills, and to directly support students who are academically vulnerable; collaborating with teachers and observing classes to help them understand students’ learning needs and to differentiate classroom instruction for students with different learning styles or specific learning challenges; coordinating learning specialist’s individually-tailored work with students and teachers’ expectations for student performance; consulting with parents in coordination with the Upper School psychologist, Upper School principal, and students’ teachers and advisor to help parents understand the challenges faced by academically vulnerable students in school, to assist in the development of a plan for parental support; and to facilitate communication between and among the student, his parents, his teachers, and professionals from the private sector; making appropriate referrals for private tutoring and/or academic coaching; developing, implementing, and administering a school-based accommodation plan for eligible students; coordinating College Board and ACT testing for students eligible for accommodations; assisting students and parents in making appropriate applications for accommodations; participating Upper School life; assuming faculty duties as requested by the Upper School Principal.
 
The successful candidate will be an experienced, skilled learning specialist able to work effectively with Upper School students and faculty.  Requirements include specific training and/or expertise in learning disabilities, adolescent development, speech and language development, learning and the brain studies, with particular emphasis on executive functioning processes and skills.
