Lower School Associate Teacher
Summary
Title:Lower School Associate Teacher
ID:1191
Department:Lower School
Description
Trinity School, a coeducational, K-12 institution located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, seeks a Lower School Associate Teacher, beginning September 2017.

The associate teacher program in the Lower School is designed for college graduates interested in pursuing a teaching career.  In most cases the appointment is for two years, in the same classroom.  Associate teachers at Trinity School have either begun, or are strongly considering enrolling in, teacher training programs.  Ongoing participation in professional development opportunities is strongly encouraged for all Lower School faculty and staff, including associate teachers.

The principle role of the associate teacher is instructional.  Most likely this will begin on a one-on-one and small group basis.  As the associate teacher is ready, he/she will be given responsibility for whole group instruction. It is our intention that the head teacher and assistant teacher work together to achieve the best balance between their experience and preferences and the demands of the grade program.

The head teacher is ultimately responsible for the academic program, parent conferences and conveying information about individual children to the parents. The associate teacher is to refer all parent questions to the head teacher, who has primary accountability for reporting on the growth, learning style and behavior of the children.  The associate teacher will play a supportive role in these situations. The associate teacher will share routine tasks with the head teacher and will have supervisory responsibilities from the beginning, which include the lunchroom, turf and escorting children to and from special classes.

Associate teachers are members of the faculty and therefore attend faculty and grade-level meetings.  Work in the classroom before and after school (8:00 AM – 4:00 PM) will be negotiated with the classroom teacher(s).  Associate teachers should expect to help classroom teachers with preparation during times when children are in special classes. For K and 1 associate teachers, the weekly preparation time is on Fridays from 11:45 AM - 4:00 PM.

The liaison for the associate teachers is the Assistant Principal.  The associate teachers will meet regularly with the Assistant Principal to discuss issues, which are relevant to their roles in the school.  The agenda items for these meetings can be selected by the associates, who are encouraged to bring ideas they would like to share. The Assistant Principal will also observe the associate teachers, and meet with both the associate and the head teachers to discuss progress.

An Equal Opportunity Employer, Trinity School seeks candidates who will add to the diversity of our school community.
